Sandra*, 32, called our telephone debt advice line for advice as she was working full time and found it difficult to get to one of our face-to-face sites. She was trying to remortgage her home to a better deal when her application was rejected. Sandra found out that she had a County Court Judgement (CCJ) on her credit file from an old parking penalty - the letters to advise her of this had gone to her previous address despite her changing this with DVLA.

As Sandra didn’t agree with the CCJ, our debt adviser explained how she could apply to cancel it and talked her step by step through the forms she needed to complete. Sandra was happy with the advice she had been given and felt confident enough to attend a court hearing with the help of our debt adviser over the phone.

The CCJ was successfully cancelled and Sandra’s credit report was corrected, meaning she was able to continue with her re-mortgage to get a better deal. Following our support, Sandra now felt confident enough to take the complaint further and request that the creditor write off the actual debt due to how it was administered and collected – this debt was written off in full.

*At Citizens Advice Liverpool, we provide confidential advice. So while their stories are true, client names and images may have been changed.

How can you help me?

Our advisers will:

  • Help you to explore your debt problem.

  • Look for ways to increase your income and reduce your outgoings.

  • Help you to understand which bills are a priority, the options you have and how they will affect you.

  • Provide support in accessing help e.g if you are seeking a Debt Relief Order, Debt Management Plan, Token Payment Plan, Nil Offer Plan or Individual Voluntary Arrangement.

  • We work closely with Liverpool City Council as part of an agreement called the Council Tax Protocol. This allows us to help you by requesting a hold on bailiff action and assisting in negotiating affordable payment arrangements.

The Greater Merseyside Money Advice Project (GMMAP) aims to increase the provision of debt advice, particularly in areas of high financial exclusion across Merseyside and parts of Cheshire. Providing more ways for people to access advice such as face to face, telephone and email is now also making it easier for people to make the first contact with advice services. In 2017/18 caseworkers helped approximately 15,000 people.
